From Astro Boy to Modern Dubbing: The Voice Journey of Kristel Mallorca
Kristel Mallorca’s journey into dubbing began with curiosity and a leap of courage. Long before she ventured into entrepreneurship and construction, she stepped into a dubbing audition at ABS-CBN with little knowledge of how the industry worked. One of her earliest projects was the classic cartoon Astro Boy, where she voiced characters like Yuko, the secretary of Dr. Elephant. At the time, dubbing sessions were intense actors recorded together in block dubbing, meaning everyone had to deliver their lines smoothly and quickly. For a newcomer surrounded by seasoned voice actors, it was overwhelming, but it also became the start of a meaningful career.
As her experience grew, Kristel worked on various projects, including Korean dramas and voice-over assignments. Along the way, she met mentors who helped shape her craft, such as Direk Bross and Kuya Choi. Through their guidance, she discovered that voice acting could extend beyond television shows into commercials, podcasts, and even video game projects. More than just professional training, the dubbing industry also gave her friendships and a sense of community that she still treasures.
Although Kristel eventually explored other career paths and now works in the business and construction field, she never fully left voice acting behind. Even during busy years when she balanced multiple jobs to support her family, she continued dubbing whenever she could. For her, voice acting has always been a passion that remains part of her life.
Recently, she lent her voice to the character Alyssa Von Vamalia in the series Heirs of the Night, a vampire-themed show aired on GMA. Reflecting on the industry today, Kristel is amazed by how technology now allows voice artists to record from home; something that was unimaginable during the early days of her career.
For aspiring dubbers, her advice is simple: don’t be afraid to start. Opportunities may not always come easily, but with passion, guidance, and the courage to try, a single audition could open the door to a lifelong journey in voice acting.
