Tumnick Balabat: Building Dreams with a DIY Voice Studio
Tumnick Balabat, aka ‘The Nick of Boys,’ inside his DIY home studio, proving that passion and resourcefulness can turn any room into a creative space
From IT consultant to certified voice artist, Tumnick Balabat—better known as “The Nick of Boys”—proves that passion can transform ordinary spaces into creative hubs. A proud graduate of the Certified Voice Artist Program (Batch 5), Tumnick shares his journey and his home recording setup, inspiring aspiring voice talents to start where they are.
His studio may not be formal, but it reflects resourcefulness and determination. Equipped with multiple microphones—including his first BM-800, a Lavalier mic, Microphone Magi, and his prized Audio-Technica—Tumnick demonstrates that investing in quality gear pays off. “This microphone has a lot of profit. Even if it’s expensive, you’ll get it back three, five, or ten times,” he explains, emphasizing the importance of treating equipment as an investment rather than an expense.
Beyond microphones, his setup includes acoustic panels, LED lights gifted by a friend, and a ring light for TikTok livestreams. He uses Adobe Audition for editing, balancing his voiceover projects with his regular work as a cloud service manager. Despite the challenges of recording at home—neighbors, pets, and background noise—Tumnick relies on isolation boxes and noise-cancelling tools to ensure professional-quality output.
His advice to aspiring voice artists is clear:
- Don’t hesitate to invest in equipment. Microphones, laptops, editing software, and noise-cancelling tools are essential.
- Treat your craft seriously. Even DIY setups can produce professional results with discipline and creativity.
- Believe in returns. Every peso spent on your studio can multiply through dedication and client work.
For Tumnick, voice artistry is more than a side hustle—it’s a passion project that blends creativity with technology. His story shows that with resourcefulness, persistence, and the right mindset, anyone can build a studio and a career from the ground up.
