Gandang Kara: From Dubbing Booths to Radio Stardom

Clarice Laurel Magbo’o, aka DJ Kara, inspiring aspiring artists with her journey from dubbing at 12 years old to becoming a celebrated radio DJ and influencer

Clarice Laurel Magbo’o, better known as DJ Kara or Gandang Kara, has carved a unique path in the world of voice artistry and broadcasting. Her story is one of transformation from a shy young dubber to a confident radio personality and social media influencer.

Clarice’s journey began at just 12 years old, when she started dubbing cartoons, anime, Korean dramas, and even Mexican telenovelas. What began as playful mimicry and prank calls turned into a passion for acting with her voice. “Yung kalokohan kong mantitrip at magboses-boses, naging trabaho,” she recalls. Dubbing became her first love, and even today, she continues to return to it despite her busy career in radio and online platforms.

Her turning point came when she met Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales through dubbing. He encouraged her to audition as a DJ at IFM, despite her doubts. At the time, Clarice was painfully shy, soft-spoken, and unsure of herself. “Sobrang mahiyain ko, sobrang bagal ko magsalita. Paano ako magiging DJ?” she wondered. But with practice, persistence, and encouragement, she slowly built her confidence.

Her first audition was unexpected she accompanied her best friend Almira, who wanted to try out. Instead, Clarice was chosen and told to start training immediately. Within a week, she was already on air. From writing adlibs word-for-word in a notebook to improvising live, she grew into her role. Her career blossomed as she moved from IFM to Yes FM, Love Radio, Energy FM, and even guest DJ stints at MOR after winning an inter-school competition.

Highlights and Challenges

Clarice describes her career as a rollercoaster ride, filled with both blessings and struggles:

- Dreams realized. Working at Love Radio, partnering with Lloyd and Papa Jack, and collaborating with veteran DJs felt like dreams she never thought possible.

- Struggles faced. At one point, she thought her radio career was over and considered focusing solely on YouTube. Depression weighed heavily, but she leaned on mentors like Kuya Choi for wisdom and encouragement.

- Resilience rewarded. She learned that setbacks are temporary. “Hindi porkat nasa baba ka, ibig sabihin forever na yun. Laging tataas din,” she reflects.

Dubbing as Her Anchor

Despite her success in radio and social media, dubbing remains her constant. “Naging YouTuber ako, naging DJ ako, pero yung dubbing, andito lang siya lagi. Nasa likod, sandalan ko siya,” she explains. For Clarice, dubbing offers simplicity and peace compared to the noise of social media. Behind the camera, she finds joy in the craft without the pressure of public scrutiny.

Advice for Aspiring Artists

Clarice often receives messages from aspiring dubbers and voiceover talents. Her advice is straightforward:

- Go for it. Seek opportunities wherever they arise.

- Find mentors. Programs like Creative Voices and the Certified Voice Artist Program open doors for young talents.

- Understand the craft. Dubbing is not easy it requires acting, timing, vocal control, and emotional delivery.

- Lead with passion. Success comes when your heart and passion drive you, not just the desire to earn money.

A Voice That Inspires

Clarice’s journey proves that even the shyest voices can grow into confident storytellers. From dubbing Ash in Pokémon to commanding radio airwaves, she embodies resilience, positivity, and passion. Her mantra echoes the wisdom of her mentor: “Opportunity comes to the bold ones.”
