Clarice Laurel Magbo’o: From Dubbing Booths to Radio Waves
Clarice Laurel Magbo’o, aka DJ Kara, proving that with passion and persistence, a shy young dubber can grow into a confident radio DJ and influencer
For Clarice Laurel Magbo’o, better known as DJ Kara or Gandang Kara, the journey into voice artistry began at a very young age. At just 12 years old, she was already dubbing cartoons, anime, Korean dramas, and even Mexican telenovelas. Those early experiences shaped her love for the craft and gave her the foundation to explore other creative avenues.
Though dubbing was her first passion, Clarice eventually found herself drawn into the world of radio. At first, she doubted whether she could succeed. “I thought being a DJ meant you had to be quick and hyper, but I was shy and slow to speak,” she recalls. With encouragement from mentors like Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales, she practiced relentlessly writing adlibs word for word, observing other DJs, and slowly building her confidence.
Her persistence paid off. Clarice became a radio DJ, working with popular stations like Love Radio, and partnering with well-known personalities such as Lloyd, Papa Jack, and Christopher. Radio opened new doors, but dubbing remained close to her heart. “Dubbing doesn’t disappear no matter what happens. It’s always behind me,” she says, emphasizing that her roots in voice artistry continue to influence her career.
Like many artists, Clarice faced struggles. At one point, she thought she might leave radio altogether and focus solely on YouTube, where she had built a strong following as an influencer. Depression and uncertainty weighed heavily, but she leaned on her mentors and her passion for voice artistry to keep moving forward. “What I learned in life is that being down doesn’t mean it’s forever. It always goes up,” she reflects.
