Andrew Sanfernando: Kuya Bonjing’s Leap of Faith into Voice Artistry
Andrew Sanfernando, aka Kuya Bonjing, proves that choosing passion over fear leads to a fulfilling career in radio and voice artistry
For Andrew Sanfernando, better known as Kuya Bonjing of IFM 93.9 Manila, the journey into voice artistry began with a leap of faith—and a thick face. While studying Broadcast Communication at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Andrew attended a school event where Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales was the guest speaker. That moment changed his life.
Pocholo asked the audience who had talent or the courage to perform. Andrew stepped forward, sampled a few voices, and though they weren’t polished yet, his boldness caught the VoiceMaster’s attention. He was chosen as a scholar for VoiceWorks Batch 26, immersing himself in talks, radio programs, dubbing, and voiceover projects.
From there, Andrew’s passion for radio blossomed. He handled five different programs under the Voice of the Youth Network, eventually becoming a trainer in the BPO industry. But even as he pursued other work, he realized his heart belonged to radio and voice artistry. He quit his job and returned to his passion, becoming a radio jock at IFM 93.9 Manila, where he partnered with Ate Julia Barreta.
His career highlights include voicing Orby in Pinoy Big Brother 737, being featured on Eat Bulaga, and working with various audio production houses in Makati. Yet, Andrew admits the road wasn’t easy. He faced rejection many times, realizing that having a modulated voice or upbeat delivery wasn’t enough. True artistry required control, immersion, and authenticity.
Andrew’s philosophy is rooted in resilience:
- Master rejection. Fear and failure are inevitable, but they can be managed and turned into growth.
- Innovate constantly. Never stop improving your craft; the moment you think you’re “good enough,” growth stops.
- Build confidence. Talent alone isn’t enough—confidence allows you to showcase your skills and seize opportunities.
- Find good connections. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who uplift and guide you.
- Pay it forward. True success lies in helping the next generation of voice artists continue the legacy.
For Andrew, choosing passion over security was the defining moment of his career. “If you reach the point where you choose between pursuing money or pursuing your passion, always choose where you’ll be happy,” he shares. His leap of faith led him to a career that not only fulfills him but also inspires others to chase their dreams.
